I travelled by normal train from Hagi to Masuda and from there to Tsuwano. Very small trains, just a single carriage to Masuda and then 2 carriages to Tsuwano, and on diesel! It did not go very fast and stopped pretty much on every station. But it was a nice ride, first along the San-In coast to Masuda and the second leg through hills. It was not possible to make any pictures, the windows were a bit dirty and it kept on raining. In fact it rained all day, and it is still raining now when I write this. I only got about 3.5 hours of site seeing done, by then I was pretty wet and cold (it was really windy too, heavy gusts to mess up my umbrella).
I visited the Taikodani Inari Shrine, the Catholic Church and walked through town a bit. I did not find the cable car to go up on the mountain to see the remains of the old castle. Not sure I would have wanted to go up with all that wind. It is too bad though because it looked as if the view would be spectacular on a nicer day.
The minshuku, Wakasagi no Yado, was excellent though, I even got to sit in the bath since I was back early. Unfortunately all other guests were Japanese so not much conversation. The food was very good, we even had maguro tatake (seared tuna)! And the people who run it are very friendly.
